Offensive Explosion Leads To 86-57 Win By Wabash at Hiram

Wabash had its best scoring output of the season Friday night, defeating Hiram 86-57 in North Coast Athletic Conference basketball action.

After a cold start that saw the Little Giants miss their first five shots from the field, Wabash exploded offensively, hitting a season-high 14 three-point shots while going 30-of-69 from the field (44 percent) and 54 percent (14-of-26) from behind the arc. Wabash was nearly perfect from the three-point arc in the second half, drilling 6-of-8 long range shots.

Junior Kyle Medeiros (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) (left) scored a career-best 19 points, as did Michael Woods (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) with 11 points and Gary Simkus (Highland, IN/Highland) with 13 off the bench. The Wabash reserves outscored the Hiram bench  40-14.

Wabash trailed 6-0 before a trey by Medeiros tied the game at 10-10. A layup by Ryan Stephens (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and a jumper by Simkus gave the Little Giants a lead that they would never relinquish. Wabash pushed its advantage to 15 points in the final two minutes of the first half before going to the locker room with a 36-24 lead.

Medeiros drained another three to start the second half of play, starting the Little Giants on an 8-2 run that pushed the advantage to 44-28 before Hiram answered. The Terriers outscored Wabash 11-2 over the next four minutes to trim the lead to nine.

Woods drained a three-pointer to put the Little Giants up by 12, then took a pass from a driving Nate Bell (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) for a layup that put Wabash in front to stay.

Kyle Coffey (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and had five blocked shots on the way to his second double-double of the year.

The Little Giants even their record at 6-6 for the season and remain undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 mark. Wabash concludes the weekend double-header with a 2 p.m. contest at Allegheny Saturday.
