The critically-acclaimed Vagina Monologues will be performed at 8 p.m., Feb. 13, on the Wabash College campus. Additionally, the celebrated author, Eve Ensler, will attend the performance and is expected to make brief remarks following the student production.
The play has already sparked considerable interest. Earlier this week Jennifer Young Abbott announced the performance is being moved to Ball Theater to accommodate more people. A full house is expected and anyone interested in attending the performance is encouraged to pick up tickets or sign up for the waiting list.
Ensler's play and her work inspired the V-Day movement, which seeks to stop violence against women.
Those attending Sunday's Wabash performance will be asked for donations that will benefit Crawfordsville's Family Crisis Shelter. More than 2,000 events in 42 countries are scheduled in March and February to promote and celebrate V-Day. Benefit productions of The Vagina Monologues are being planned in over 940 cities and colleges around the world.
Female Valparaiso students, and possibly two or three Wabash female faculty or staff members, will perform the monologues.
The Gender Issues committee has arranged for the performance.
The Vagina Monologues was first performed in 1996 in New York and is based on interviews with more than 200 women about their memories and experiences of sexuality. It has been described by critics nationwide as witty and wise. It has been performed by celebrities, students and others all across the country.
With the addition of Ensler’s appearance, the Gender Issues Committee has instituted a ticket policy for the play. Box Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Box Office will open 6:30 p.m. the day of the show.
Tickets for this event are not available by e-mail or voicemail.
