Wabash Wrestlers Win Manchester Spartan Classic

The Wabash College wrestling team, ranked 21st  in the latest Brute/Adidias National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, had two champions, three second place, and two third place finishes to win the team title at Saturday's Manchester Spartan Wrestling Classic.

Chris Healy (SR/Jasper, IN/Jasper), recently ranked second in the nation at 174 pounds in the same poll that place the Little Giants 21st as a team, was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler after finishing the invite with a spotless 3-0 mark. He won each of his matches by fall, pinning two opponents and earning a 21-6 technical fall in the semifinals. He pinned second-seeded Phil Kruzel of the University of Chicago at 4:52 in the finals to win the 174-pound title.

Senior Phu Hong (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) took the 125-pound title with a 3-0 mark. Hong was a 9-5 winner in the championship bout over Ohio Northern University's David Penny.

Will Clarke (SO/Indianapolis, IN/North Central) took second place at 184 pounds. He won his first three matches, including a 2-1 sudden victory over Ben Barnes in the semifinals before falling 4-3 in the finals to Rose-Hulman's Byron Sanders.

Senior Adam Miller (Pendleton, IN/Pendleton Heights) added another second place finish to the Wabash effort, finishing 2-1 at 157 pounds. Miller opened with a 5-1 victory over Eric Claus of Mount Union, followed by a decisive 8-1 win against Paul Kremsky from Chicago. Manchester College's Danny Irwin ended Miller's title hopes. The number seed defeated Miller 5-2 in a close contest.

Garrett Pino (SO/Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North) was final Wabash wrestler to take home second place. Pino won his 133-pound semifinal match against Brandon Tillman 9-0 but was pinned in the championship bout.

Drew McCoy (SR/Greenfield, IN/New Palestine) finished third at 149 pounds. Freshman Garrett Thiel (Lowell, IN/Lowell) took third place at 197 pounds.
