Fahey Ties For First in 100 Breaststroke; Wabash Third at Conference Swim Meet

The Wabash swimming and diving team added two more All-Conference honors, including the team’s first individual champion, in day two of the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio.

Wabash crowned its first conference champion in swimming on Friday night since joining the NCAC. Senior Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) tied for first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.94.

Fahey touched at the exact same time as Allegheny’s Matt Wilson, splitting the conference title between the two. Senior Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA "B" cut time of 58.59. Fahey’s time was better than the "B" cut time, as well. Hewitt, who cut a half-second off his morning preliminary time in the evening’s final session, just missed making the All-Conference cut by .04 seconds.

Ben’s brother, Michael Hewiit (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) added another All-Conference award to the Little Giants’ total for the meet. The sophomore took third in the 100 butterfly with a "B" cut time of 51.28.

"I’ve just been amazed at our performances in the first two days of the meet," said Wabash head coach Peter Casares. "I knew our swimmers were mentally ready to work hard in this meet, but they’ve surpassed what thought they might do. It seems that everytime we dive into the water we’re swimming a lifetime best."

Wabash remained in third place in the team scoring with 595 points. Kenyon (1,099) and Denison (993) lead the way with Allegheny (443) in fourth place. Wooster (439), Wittenberg (431), Oberlin (384), Hiram (354), and Ohio Wesleyan (219) round out the standings.

The meet concludes Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated for 6:30 p.m.
