Little Giants Fall 11-1 In Baseball Series Sweep By DePauw

Wabash stayed even with the DePauw baseball team through the early innings before the visiting Tigers' offense exploded on the way to an 11-1 win Wednesday afternoon at Mud Hollow Field to sweep the two-game series against the Little Giants.

A five-run seventh inning cost the Little Giants a chance at beating the Tigers for the first time in ten tries. Wabash took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jared Bogan (Struthers, OH/Struthers) doubled, then scored two batters later on an RBI fielder's choice by Shaun Rico (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista). DePauw tied the game in sixth on an unearned run when Greg DeBeer reached on an error, then came around to score on an RBI single by Kevin McAteer.

The Tigers scored five unearned runs in the seventh to break the game open, plating all five after the Little Giants picked up two outs with only one runner on in the inning. The big blow came on a two-run single by Matt Deahl with DePauw already in front 2-1. The Tigers would add two more runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to cruise to the 11-1 victory.

John Thiry (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) suffered the loss, going 6-2/3 innings with eight hits, six unearned runs and seven strikeouts. Phil Ramos (Zillah, WA/Zillah) and Bogen each had two hits.

Wabash falls to 8-5 with the loss, while DePauw improves to 8-5. The Little Giants return to action Saturday afternoon at noon against Olivet College at Mud Hollow Field.
