Thinclads Seventh at Little State Championships

Sophomores Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) and Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Evansville Bosse) finished in the top-20 in the final individual totals to lead the Wabash College track and field team to a seventh-place finish out of 19 teams at the Little State Championships on Saturday.

Green finished 13th in the final individual standings, while DeYoung was 19th.Green took second place in the 200-meter dash, finishing the race in 22.37 before adding a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.12. He finished just ahead of teammate Chris Morris (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville), who took fifth with a time of 51.24. Green also anchored the final leg of the Little Giants' 4 X 400 relay team that took fourth place (3:24.46).

DeYoung was third in the high jump, clearing 6' 6", and had a personal-best in the triple jump with a leap of 43' 1/4" to finish fourth. He added a 10th in the long jump to his efforts with a jump of 20' 6 1/4".

Several other Little Giants also finished the meet with personal bests. Matt Mercer (Carmel, IN/Carmel) took seventh place in the shot put with a career-best throw of 47' 3 3/4". Caleb Ishman (Gary, IN/Emerson Visual and Performing Arts) topped his best career effort with a throw of 136' 8" in the hammer throw to take ninth place. Zach Medler (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) also set a personal best in the 800-meter run with a sixth-place finishing time of 1:57.09.

Other top performances for Wabash included John Crumpacker (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), who finished sixth in the javelin throw with a toss of 159' 5", and eighth in the pole vault by clearing 12' 11 3/4". Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) was third and Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) took fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Sherer finished in 4:01.59, and Ruge crossed the line in 4:02.54. Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) returned from an early season injury to take eighth in the 5,000-meter run (15:59.02). Kevin Lowry (Francesville, IN/West Central) took ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.97), and Brent Bridwell (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) was fifth in the high jump after clearing 6' 2".
