Wilhelm Sets Home Run Record As Wabash Splits With Earlham

Matt Wilhelm (Wabash, IN/Southwood) hit his seventh home run of the season Sunday, breaking his own single season record of six shared with two other players. Pitcher Adams (Avon, IN/Avon) recorded his third win of the season as the junior hurled a four-hit shutout to give Wabash a 2-0 win in the second game against Earlham College on Sunday night. Wabash lost the opener to Earlham 6-5.

Adams held the Quakers to four hits while striking out seven with no walks. Adams evened his season record at 3-3 as the Little Giants were able to scrap for two runs in the first inning for the difference in the game.

Jay Dee Flynn (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) led off the game by reaching on a thowing error and racing to second base. Matt Carlson (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) reached on the second error of the game by the Quakers, reaching second as Flynn scored what would be the game-winning run. Carlson scored two batters later when Scott Shinkan (Munster, IN/Munster) doubled to left. Adams made the two runs hold up, only allowing three runners to reach third base in the game.

The Little Giants were edged out in a 6-5 win by Earlham in the first game. Wabash trailed by three before rallying for two runs in the top of the sixth inning. After an Adams single to center, Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) doubled to put runners at second and third. Shinkan brought one run home with a sacrifice fly before a one-run double by Aaron Vela (Schererville, IN/Jay County) cut the lead to two.

Wabash put another run on the board in the seventh when Wilhelm smacked his seventh home run of the season. Wilhelm hit six dingers last season, tying him with Nate Baker ’94 and Jason Cantrell ’93. Wilhelm already broke the career home run record earlier this season by smashing his 14th career homer to break the mark of 13 set by Cantrell. Wilhelm currently sits at 19 home runs in his four-year stint with the Little Giants baseball team.

Wabash moves to 7-16 with the split, 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference Western Division. The two teams will meet for the third game of the series on Wednesday night at McBride Stadium in Richmond, IN at 8 p.m.
