Compendium of Assessment Instruments for Colleges and Universities

Measuring Higher Education:
A Compendium of Assessment Instruments for Colleges and Universities

Prepared for the Teagle Foundation by Public Impact
Lucy M. Steiner, Bryan C. Hassel, and Steven J. Tepper
November 2004

This document, prepared for the Teagle Foundation, summarizes 27 assessment instruments and initiatives, including student assessments, surveys, and other items. For each item, this table indicates five things: the administrator of the instrument; the individuals assessed or surveyed and the rational for its use; the types of variables included in the instrument; practical issues, such as cost; and finally, contact information. The section on variables can be particularly useful in assessing liberal arts outcomes because you can search for particular outcomes such as critical thinking or lifelong learning and then identify appropriate instruments.
