DePauw University dominated the 44th Wabash Hokum Karem, sweeping first place in the final men's and women's team standings. Wabash finished fourth in the men's race.
The annual training event, a combination of cross country and relay running, features runners paired in groups of two. The first runner races for a mile, then hands off the baton to a teammate. The teamate runs the same mile loop, then hands the baton back to the first runner. This continues until both runners race for three miles in the men's race and two miles in the women's race.
DePauw's Chad Bennett and Dusty Kime combined for a first place finish in the men's race with a time of 28:29. Juniors Dennis Frazee (Griffith, IN/Calumet) (right) and Dustin Beck (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie) finished eighth overall with a time of 29:59. Charles Wohlhuter (JR/Wheaton, IL/Wheaton-Warrenville South) (below left) and Ben Bly (SO/Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence North) took tenth place (30:11). Freshmen Sam Compton-Craig (Tipton, IN/Tipton) and Hugh Jackson (Ft. Wayne, IN/South) paired for an 18th-place finish, running the race in 31:41.
DePauw won the men's team competition with nine total points. The University of Indianapolis was second with 18 points. Millikin finished third with 24 points. Wabash was fourth with 27 points.
The Tigers won the women's race by taking first, third, and fourth place for a total of eighth points. DePauw's Leslie Dillon and Amanda Royalty set a new meet record, winning the race with a time of 22:28.
Wabash will return to action next Saturday at the Great Lakes Colleges Association Cross Country Championships. The meet will be held at Albion College in Albion, Michigan.
