Soccer Picks Up First Win With 2-1 Victory Over Benedictine

The Wabash soccer team won its first match of the 2005 season, defeating Benedictine University 2-1 in the opening match of the 16th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic. The tournament is being hosted by Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Sophomore Gary Simkus (Highland, IN/Highland) scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes left in the match to break a 1-1 tie. Simkus had scored the earlier goal on a header early in the second half of the match.

Senior goalkeeper Will McAdams (Carmel, IN/Carmel) had four saves on five shots on goal to earn the win in the net for the Little Giants.

"We applied offensive pressure during the entire match," said head coach Vernon Mummert. "Our defense really improved, without losing any of the offensive attack we've shown as a team in the first three matches.

The Little Giants fired nine shots in the game to only five for Benedictine.

Wabash (1-3) will play Centre Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Classic.
