Wabash battled the weather and a fiesty Millikin University soccer team Thursday night, losing 2-1 on back-to-back goals over a two-minute span in the final ten minutes of the match.
The Little Giants fired home the first goal of the match at Mud Hollow Field in the 58th minute. Sophomore Ryan Leagre (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) got loose on the right side of the field and flicked a pass to George Padgitt (FR/Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) (photo left). Padgitt blasted a shot over the goalkeeper and into the upper-left corner of the net to give Wabash its first lead of the season.
Wabash held that lead until the 84th minute. Millikin's David Oberst started the action with a corner kick that lofted to the far side of the goal where Cory Yontz headed the ball home to tie the match at 1-1. Play had scarcely resumed when Oberst struck again, this time slipping a pass through the Wabash defense to Josh Hunt for the game-winner.
Senior Will McAdams (Carmel, IN/Carmel) turned away seven shots on goal in the contest. The Little Giants had seven shots on goal as a team, as well. Padgitt had two on net, as did sophomore Gary Simkus (Highland, IN/Highland).
Wabash (1-5) will begin North Coast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. at Kenyon College.
