Second Simkus Goal Leads To 4-3 Soccer Win at Anderson

Sophomore Gary Simkus (Highland, IN/Highland) (left) scored his second goal of the match just after halftime to boost Wabash to a 4-3 victory at Anderson University Wednesday afternoon.

Simkus got things started less than two minutes into the match, scoring an unassisted goal to put the Little Giants in front 1-0. Freshman George Padgitt (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) made it a 2-0 contest when he hit a rebound off the goalkeeper into the net with less than nine minutes gone by in the match.

The Ravens battled back to cut the lead to one on a goal by Sandesh Arles in the 24th minute.

With the Little Giants still clinging to a one-goal lead at the start of the second half, sophomore Ryan Leagre (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) fired a shot that glanced off of an Anderson player and past the goalkeeper to give Wabash a two-goal advantage. Simkus added an insurance goal on his team-leading eighth goal of the season. He took a pass from Chris Kiester (Winter Haven, FL/Canterbury (IN)), giving Wabash the 4-2 lead in the 58th minute.

Wabash held on despite giving up two late goals scored by the Ravens' Manny Kratzat.

Will McAdams (SR/Carmel, IN/Carmel) earned the win in goal, making seven saves while facing 11 shots on goal.

The Little Giants improve to 5-7 with the victory. Wabash returns to North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops. OWU is ranked fifth in the latest CSCAA coaches poll. Wabash enters the match 2-1 in NCAC play.
