Wabash Wins High-Scoring Classic Contest

A three-goal effort from junior Carlos Aguirre (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis), and goals from freshmen Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) and Colin Smith (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) gave Wabash a 5-4 victory over Villa Julie College in Sunday's Wabash Soccer Classic.

Schubert put the Little Giants on the scoreboard first just over two minutes into the match on his first goal of his career with a blast from the right side of the net. Wabash was forced to respond to a game-tying goal by the Mustangs just 14 seconds later. The Little Giants did just that when Aguirre took a pass from junior Adam Reisig (Kansas City, MO/Baker College) and put the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Villa Julie answered with another game-tying goal 20 minutes into the match before Schubert and Aguirre combined to give Wabash another lead. Schubert blasted a shot that Villa Julie's Steve Montalvo couldn't hold. Aguirre slammed the rebound into the goal to put Wabash in front 3-2. After another game-tying goal by Villa Julie, Smith scored on a direct free kick that curved into the left side of the net to put Wabash in front 4-3.

Aguirre added his third goal, the first hat trick of his Wabash career, in the second half to secure the win for the Little Giants.

"This was a good test this weekend," said head coach George Perry. "We got an idea of where we need to get to when we played Kalamazoo on Saturday. Today we responded well each time Villa Julie scored. We never got down. We just kept executing and found a way to win."

The Little Giants outshot the Mustangs 22-14 and had more shots on goal, 16-10.

The win puts Wabash even on the season at 1-1. The Little Giants travel to Anderson on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.

Kalamazoo defeated DePauw 1-0 in a double-overtime match in the first game on Sunday.
