Hewitt Earns High-Point Swimmer Honors at DePauw Invitational

Junior Michael Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) has the high-point swimmer at the 2005 DePauw Invitational, recording two first place finishes and a second individually in addition to participating on two first place relay teams.

Hewitt won the 200-yard butterfly after trimming over four seconds off his preliminary time in the finals. He won the event with a time of 1:56.20, over a second faster than the second place swimmer. Hewitt added another top finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.96. He was second in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 2/10ths of a second behind the winner after touching in 52.45.

Hewitt joined Jim Leuck (FR/Lafayette, IN/Jefferson), Kyle Weaver (JR/Portland, IN/Jay County), and Jordon Extine (FR/Muncie, IN/Yorktown) to win the 200 medley relay (1:39.40). Hewitt, Weaver, and Extine combined with Tim Deal (FR/Danville, IN/Danville Community) to win the 400 free relay (3:17.21). The same quartet also took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.78).

Weaver also performed well individually. He was second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.88. He also took fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.67). Extine added a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.65).

Freshman Max Rubesch (Monticello, IN/Twin Lakes) had his best finish in the mile, taking second place with a time of 17:31.58.

Senior Andrew Wells (Portland, IN/Jay County) also scored two top-eight finals finishes. Wells was sixth in the mile freestyle with a time of 17:56.92. He also added an eighth place finish in the 500 free (5:14.55).

Wabash scored 457 points in the team competition, with six swimmers missing from the lineup who were participating in the University of Miami Invitational at the same time in Ohio. DePauw won with 712 points. Wittenberg was second (552) with Transylvania taking third place (528). Centre (292.5), Millikin (270), Rose-Hulman (246), Monmouth (229.5), Rhodes (145), Illinois Wesleyan (66), and Alma (65) rounded out the team scoring.
