Wabash Sprints Past Greenville

The Wabash basketball team found itself down three points to Greenville College with 11:38 showing on the first half game clock. The Little Giants responded with a 26-4 run on the way to an 82-57 victory over the Panthers, the seventh consecutive victory for the Wabash squad.

Four players scored in double figures, led by the 13-point effort of senior guard Kyle Medeiros. Caleb Lyttle added 12 points, while Andrew Zimmer and Gary Simkus each poured in 10.

The Little Giants raced to an early 6-0 lead on baskets by Zimmer, Medeiros, and Lyttle before Greenville answered with a 7-1 scoring stretch to tie the game. Wabash once again rallied, this time moving in front 18-14 on two free throws by Ryan Stephens before the Panthers once again found an answer. Bryson Taylor hit two free throws, then scored after a steal by Ben Hensold to tie the game at 18-18. A three-pointer by AJ Turner made it 21-18 in favor of Greenville.

It would be the last time the Panthers would lead. After a layup by Medeiros trimmed the Greenville advantage to one point, the senior guard drilled a trey to put Wabash in front 23-21. Adonis Joseph (pictured right) added two of his six points after a steal by Michael Woods. A steal and dunk by Zimmer (pictured below left) made it a 27-21 contest. The Little Giants would score the next seven points after a Taylor basket to move in front by 11. Dustin Huff capped the next Wabash scoring stretch with a three-pointer with 25 seconds left in the half to give the Little Giants the 44-25 edge at the break.

The Little Giants stretched the lead to 33 points midway through the second period before settling for the 25-point win.

Stephens added eight rebounds and two points. Zimmer had eight boards, two blocked shots, and two steals. Freshman Brian Maloney grabbed six boards in 14 minutes of action coming off the Wabash bench.

The seven-game winning streak is the longest since the Little Giants picked up seven consecutive victories midway through the 1999-2000 season, a year that saw Wabash finish second in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a record of 20-7.

Wabash returns to action Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. NCAC contest at Chadwick Court against Allegheny College. The Little Giants play the Hiram College Terriers at home at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
