George Perry Named Soccer Coach At Wabash

Wabash College Athletic Director Vernon Mummert has announced that George Perry III, 44, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana has been named head soccer coach and facilities manager at Wabash College.

Perry, a 1982 Indiana University graduate, was a three-time captain of the Hoosier soccer program. He played for legendary Indiana soccer coach Jerry Yeagley from 1975-77, playing in one NCAA Division I National Championship game and earning Honorable Mention All-America honors in 1977.

Perry served as an assistant for Yeagley and as head coach of the Indiana University Women's Soccer Club until 1983 when he was hired by the University of Rochester as men's head soccer coach. Perry had 70-34-9 record at Rochester over his five-year career. His Rochester team was ranked 20th in the nation in Division III in 1983, and in 1986 set a Rochester record for wins with a 15-4-0 record. His 1986 squad also reached the second-round of the NCAA Tournament.

Perry left Rochester to become the men's head soccer coach at St. Bonaventure University until 1994. He returned to Indiana in 1994 to become the state coach for the Indiana Youth Soccer Association. Perry took a position at Canterbury School in Ft. Wayne as Director of Coaching and as a physical education and mathematics teacher in 1996.

"I'm excited about the chance to work with a growing soccer program and new athletic facility," said Perry. "I believe that the rich tradition and educational opportunities give Wabash the ability to recruit extremely competitive and talented players. I look forward to competing against some of the top Division III programs in the nation with our North Coast Athletic Conference opponents, as well as managing what I believe will be one of the top athletic facilities at any Division III school in the Midwest if not in the nation."

Perry has been an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, chairing the NSCAA/Division I Legislation Committee for two years and is presently the chairman of the Long Term Youth Award Committee. He also serves as the assistant director of coaching for the NSCAA.

"Perry will bring a wealth of soccer knowledge and expertise to Wabash College and the Crawfordsville community," said Mummert. "George's network with high school, club, and college coaches in Indiana, the Midwest and across the nation will open up tremendous recruiting opportunities for the Wabash College soccer program. He will be an invaluable asset to our athletic department. His organizational and leadership skills will prove to be very beneficial to us in the new Allen Athletic and Recreation Center."

Perry and his wife, Ellen have four children, Nicole (15), George IV (12), Laura Beth (10), and Matthew (4). Perry will begin his coaching duties July 1.
