History professor Rick Warner is spending Spring Break traveling through Mexico to conduct research. Assisting the Latin America history professor is sophomore Adrian Mendoza, a Chicago native.
Professor Warner writes from Mexico:
"Adrian and I are looking in libraries, archives, and bookstores for research materials for two of my projects. When these places are not open we are visiting historical sites to ascertain the best way to include them in my next immersion trip to Mexico City, which I hope will be this fall or next fall.
"The first photo is taken in front of an Orozco mural about the Mexican Revolution, in Chapultapec Castle. The second picture was taken in front of a new mural in a metro station, further proof of the national and popular interest in remembering the indigenous past.
"The final photograph was taken at Cholula, on the outer layer of a series of pyramids. There is a colonial church on top. To preserve the pyramids and church, archaeologists spent 40 years in the mid 20th century digging tunnels. This was very cool to wander through and I cannot wait to do it again with other students."
Warner has previously guided groups of students and faculty through Mexico on immersion learning trips and during faculty trips to determine the best ways to teach modules of the all-sophomore course, Cultures and Traditions.
