Hits Elude Little Giants In Sunday Split with Clarke

Wabash made the most of six total hits in two games Sunday, coming away with a split of the doubleheader against Clarke College. The Little Giants took a 2-1 victory in game one before losing 6-0 in game two.

Senior starter John Thiry (right) gave up one run in the first inning, giving up a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly to trail 1-0. He settled in over the next six innings to allow only one more hit while striking out six to earn his second victory of the season. (Click here to view a photo album from the Wabash victory.)

The Little Giants managed only two hits, but scrapped for two runs in the first and third innings. David Culp led off the home half of the first with a single, advancing to second on a throwing error on the same play. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Hamilton, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Billy King.

King added his second RBI with another sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Hamilton after he reached base on an error, stole second, then went to third on a wild pitch.

Justin VanderIest had the only other hit for the Little Giants in the game. Jared Bogan smashed a shot down the right field line in the third inning, but was robbed of an extra-base hit when Tom Marshall made a diving grab to record the third out to end inning. Bogan finished the game 0-for-2 with a walk to end his ten-game hitting streak.

Wabash would manage just four hits while stranding six base runners in the final game of the series. Clarke broke the game open in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits and one Wabash error. A sacrifice fly in the fourth added another run before Pat Hawker capped the Clarke victory with a solo home run in the fifth.

Culp, Mike Nowak, Chris Sides, and Jake Thomas each collected one hit for the Little Giants. Sides had the only extra-base hit of the game for the Little Giants on a two-out double in the sixth.

Wabash will try to revive the bats Wednesday afternoon with a 3 p.m. home contest against DePauw University. The Tigers defeated Wabash 1-0 last Wednesday afternoon in Greencastle.
