Errors Prove Costly in 10-3 Baseball Loss at Rose

Four Wabash errors sent the Little Giant baseball team to a 10-3 loss at Rose-Hulman Wednesday night. The loss dropped Wabash to 16-17 for the season with five regular season games left on the schedule

"We’re not playing Wabash baseball," head coach Tom Flynn told the team after the game. "We have these five games remaining. We need to keep playing hard every play. We were ok tonight until walks and errors put us in a hole."

The Little Giants took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Phil Ramos after Chris Sides drove home the first two Wabash runs in the third. Rose scored a run in the fifth before four runs on two hits and huge error in the sixth.

After drawing a walk and hit batsmen, the Little Giants misplayed a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Starting pitcher Andy Weeks gave up a base hit to tie the game before giving way to Chris Schmaltz, who was greeted with an RBI double, clearing the bases to give the Engineers a 5-3 lead. A single added another run before the inning came to end.

Wabash had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the seventh when Jared Bogan smashed a one out, pinch-hit double, but was stranded at third after two walks and two fly balls brought the inning to an end.

A throwing error in the seventh with two runners on base turned into a three-run mistake by Wabash when the Engineer’s Tim Braun singled to left, then came all the way around to score when a toss to third after a play at the plate sailed down the left field line to make it 9-3. Rose added one more run in the eighth to put the game on ice.

Mike Nowak extended his hitting streak to five games, while Ramos collected a hit in his fourth consecutive game.

Wabash concludes the home portion of its season this weekend with four games against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Denison University. Games begin at noon at Mud Hollow Field both Saturday and Sunday.
