Turnovers End in Loss for Wabash

Turnovers and second-chance baskets by Hampden-Sydney were too much for the Wabash basketball team to overcome as the Little Giants lost their first game of the season 105-65.

The loss came in the final game of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network 2001 Tipoff Classic. This was the first meeting between the two all-male schools' basketball teams.

Wabash had a 4-3 lead at the start before the Tigers ran off a 7-0 run to take the lead they would never relinquish. Hampden-Sydney scored 40 points off of 31 Wabash turnovers, and scored 40 points after grabbing 21 offensive rebounds.

The Little Giants trailed 55-26 at halftime and could get no closer as the Tigers jumped ahead by 40 with ten minutes remaining in the game.

Sophomore James Bartlett (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Little Giants. Juniors Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) and Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) had 14 points each. Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) had 12 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots to earn a spot on the All-Classic team, along with Claxton.

Wabash (1-1) will open the home portion of the 2001-02 season on Tuesday, November 20 as Hanover comes to Chadwick Court for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
