Admissions Canoe Trip a Big Hit

What began as a summer send-off event for a handful of students from Harrison High School in Lafayette has grown into one of our most popular campus visit programs.

Mark Grossenbacher '97, then a teacher at Harrison, teamed with Mike Reidy to create a spring canoe trip designed to bring incoming freshman to campus for a more relaxed visit prior to enrolling in August. This year's event brought over 50 canoeists to campus. Attendees included prospective students, incoming freshmen, current students, Wabash faculty, alumni and staff.  Special thanks go to Mike Reidy who coordinated the entire event, Dr. Howland and Dr. Brown for their participation, and Jared Grigsby '01 who brought several of his students to campus.

Heavy rains of late had us concerned about the water levels, but the creek proved to be swift yet safe for today's trip.  A trip than takes about 90 under normal conditions took just about an hour thanks to the current, but everyone enjoyed themselves nonetheless. I didn't climb into a canoe today, but took photos throughout the morning.  Check out today's album

After returning to campus and drying off, we headed to Caleb Mills house for a picnic and the presentation of a few awards.  Yogi Kao '10 got the prize for traveling the greatest distance to join us. Yogi drove from his home in Yorktown Heights, NY.  Craig Wildey '10 receive the award for "wettest canoer".  The evidence I saw pointed to Rudy Cope as the clear winner, but we can't award prizes to our staff.

If you couldn't join today and wish to visit campus this summer, just give us a call at 800-345-5385 or visit www.wabash.edu/admissions/visit to set up an appointment to visit campus.  Whether you're just passing through or planning a special trip, we welcome the opportunity to show you around campus this summer.
