DesJean, Claxton Lead Wabash to Conference Win

Juniors Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) (photo) and Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbyville) combined for 54 points as Wabash defeated Kenyon College 91-65 to open the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of the basketball season on Saturday.

DesJean scored 30 points, tying his career-best effort from last season, and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to lead both teams in scoring. The 6-6 forward was 9-16 from the field, including his second three-pointer of the season, and a near-perfect 11-12 from the free throw line. He added two blocked shots and had four assists and two steals, as well.

Claxton had 24 points, one short of tying his season- and career-high, while hitting all eight free throw attempts in the game.

The Little Giants hit 29-of-35 free throws (83-percent), outscoring Kenyon by 17 points as the Lords hit 12-of-20 shots from the line.

Wabash trailed by three in the first two minutes of the game before jumping out to a six-point lead on a DesJean layup just three minutes later. The Little Giants increased the lead to eight points, only to see the Lords come back to take a one point lead with 9:51 remaining in the first half.

Wabash went on another run, this time outscoring Kenyon 12-4 to take a 35-26 lead when James Bartlett (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual) connected on a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining in the half. The Little Giants took a nine point lead into the locker room with two free throws from DesJean in the last 14 seconds of the half.

Wabash never let Kenyon get any closer than to within seven points to start the second half, jumping the lead to as many as 19 points. Claxton tallied 16 points in the second half to keep the Little Giants in front, picking up the first conference win of the season and ending a three-game losing streak for Wabash.

The Little Giants (2-3, 1-0) will continue NCAC play on Wednesday night, traveling to Springfield, Ohio to play Wittenberg University at 7:30 p.m.
