The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance, will start off the season. Performances will be October 4-7 at 8 p.m. The performances will be in Ball Theater in the Fine Arts Center.
The Elephant Man is the story of Joseph Merrick, a remarkably sensitive, artistic, and intelligent man whose disfigurement is exploited by Victorian society. Merrick is befriended by an ambitious and brilliant young surgeon, Frederick Treves, who looks after him in his last few years—finding him a home in a London hospital where Merrick’s unusual presence is shrewdly used for fund-raising. Merrick’s story is one of humanity and isolation, and telling his story helps us define our own.
The second production of the season will be the Studio One-Acts. Performances will be presented November 9-11 at 8 p.m. each evening in Experimental Theater in the Fine Arts Center.
The Studio One-Acts provide an opportunity for theater students to showcase their skills. These projects emphasize the importance of the collaborative creative process and demonstrate the Wabash College Theater Department’s belief that powerful and imaginative theater can thrive in productions of limited scale.
The third production of the season will be Side Man by Warren Leight. Performances will take place February 21-24 at 8 p.m. each evening in Ball Theater in the Fine Arts Center.
Winner of the 1999 Tony Award for Best Play, Side Man spans three decades in the life of a Manhattan musician. Playwright Warren Leight, whose father was a side man, captures the pulse and climate of the New York jazz scene in a tender, deeply personal memory play about the turmoil in a jazz trumpeter’s family as his career crumbles at the dawn of the age of rock-and-roll. "Side Man evokes a lost world and lost love with sweet, but never sentimental, poignancy."—NY Daily News
The fourth and final production of the season will be Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare, which will be presented April 18-21 with performances starting at 8 p.m. each evening in Ball Theater in the Fine Arts Center.
In Shakespeare’s clever and charming comedy, two bosom buddies from Verona travel to Milan to learn the art of courtship and fall in love with the same woman. Will love or friendship win the day? Is Proteus insane? Who is Sylvia? What is a dog doing on stage? Shakespeare’s answers have surprised and delighted audiences for more than 400 years.
