A strong finish over the final 200 meters by Dennis Frazee gave the senior and his partner, junior Geoff Lambert, to third place at Saturday’s Wabash Hokum Karem. The Little Giants finished second as a team at the annual start-of-season event.
Trailing DePauw’s Chris Dietrick at the entrance to Huntsman Track, Frazee outkicked Dietrick to the finish to capture the third spot in the standings with a time of 29:19. The pair of Sam Compton-Craig and Dustin Beck took seventh overall after just finishing behind the sixth-place team from DePauw by less than a second. Beck crossed the line in 29:32.
The Hokum Karem was created by J. Owen Huntsman, namesake of the 400-meter track where the runners start, exchange batons, and finish the race each year. Huntsman created the Hokum Karem after dreaming of a multi-directional relay race featuring runners alternating one-mile loops three times, handing off a baton to a teammate after each mile. The Little Giants’ final points of the race came from freshman Micah Milliman and sophomore Hugh Jackson, combining for a tenth-place finish (30:17). Wabash finished second with 13 points behind DePauw (7). The University of Indianapolis was third (25), followed by Millikin (33) and Wittenberg (38).
Wabash returns to action next weekend at the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship meet at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana.
