Tennis Duo Reaches ITA Regional Quarterfinals

Sophomore Jay Horrey and senior Adam Van Zee picked up three victories, including a win over the second-seeded team, in doubles play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Regional Tournament. The tourney was held over the weekend at Washington University in St. Louis.

Horrey and Van Zee scored an 8-5 victory in the opening round of 64 Saturday morning. That earned the pair a match against the second-seeded team from Washington University, Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland, on their home court. Cutler and Hoeland advanced with a hard-fought 9-8 win in the first round, but were no match for the Little Giants' doubles team. Horrey and Van Zee earned an 8-6 victory, moving on to the round of 16.

The duo picked up a 9-8 victory over Wheaton's David Warren and Joshua Williams, who had knocked off the ninth-seeded team in tournament in the previous round. But the tournament came to an end for Horrey and Van Zee in the quarterfinals, losing 8-5 to Joseph Tchan and Alex Winney from the University of Chicago.

Horrey, the 2006 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Newcomer of the Year, also played in the singles tournament. He entered the draw seeded 10th and won his opening match against Mike Goorhouse from Calvin by a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Horrey dropped a straight sets 6-1, 7-5 decision to DePauw's Scott Sandager in the next round.
