The generosity of Crawfordsville people amazed Wabash College students during Tuesday night¹s Montgomery United Fund For You Drive.
Four Wabash students were so impressed as people opened their wallets or wrote checks that the four men collected $10 among themselves and placed the amount along with the community donations they collected, MUFFY financial assistant Ramona McCance said.
McCance and Peggy Walker, wife of former MUFFY executive director Stan Walker, counted the money the nearly 180 students returned with from their rounds throughout Crawfordsville. By 9:20 p.m., they had been $3,155.64 brought to Elston Homestead, home of new Wabash president Patrick White and wife Chris, where the Whites hosted a reception.
Outgoing residential drive chairman Larry Frye was pleased with the early results. "We don¹t usually have a grand total for about another two weeks," Frye said.
People who did not get a chance to contribute to the residential drive still have time. People may designate the money to go toward the residential drive and that will be counted toward the drive, McCance said.
People may mail contributions to MUFFY, P.O. Box 247, Crawfordsville, IN 47933, or bring a donation by the office in the downtown Crawfordsville National City Bank building. 'Residential drive' must be marked on checks for money to go toward that fund.
MUFFY executive director David Johnson was pleased with the enthusiasm of the Wabash students and the generosity of the community.
"It shows a great quality in the Wabash men - their willingness to help," Johnson said. "So many of them told me they were glad to help."
History professor Richard Warner helped Frye with this year's residential drive. Warner plans to coordinate future drives. "The students have a lot of respect for the community," Warner said.
