The Wabash College Chamber Orchestra invites you to an evening of beautiful music at 7 p.m., Sunday, December 3 in Salter Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center.
Under the direction of Wabash music instructor, Alfred S. Abel, the Wabash College Chamber Orchestra consists of a diverse group of Wabash College students, faculty, and members of the Crawfordsville community.
They will be performing Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla; Gabriel Fauré’s Masques et bergamasques, op. 112; and Luigi Boccherini’s Sinfonia, op. 37.
Overture is from the opera Russlan and Ludmilla with a story based on a satirical fairy tale by Alexander Pushkin and its music drawn largely from Russian folk music. The overture, based on music from the opera's final celebration scene, is an audience favorite.
Masques et bergamasques was first performed in 1919. The orchestral suite consists of four movements: Overture, Minuet, Gavotte, Pastorale. Fauré reportedly said of the work that "it is like the impression you get from the paintings of Watteau."
Sinfonia is scored for a smaller ensemble of string orchestra and flute, oboe, bassoon, and French horn. A delightful pre-classical work from the 18th century.
The Crawfordsville community is invited to the free concert. No tickets are required.
