Baseball Team Earns Eight Victory With Saturday Split

The Wabash baseball team used some good old-fashioned hustle on Saturday to manufacture three runs on the way to a 4-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats took the second game 9-4.

Wabash plated one run in each of the first four innings of the game to grab the victory. Jay Dee Flynn (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) opened the game at third base after being hit with a pitch and stealing second and going to third on the errant throw from the catcher. Flynn scored when the Little Giant's Matt Wilhelm (Wabash, IN/Southwood) grounded into a double play.

Catcher Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) singled in the second and scored two batters later from second when second baseman Aaron Vela (Schererville, IN/Lake Central singled him home. Wilhelm scored in the third after doubling when the Wildcats' shortstop threw a ground ball out of play down the first base line. The final run scored in the fourth when Knott singled and pinch-runner Garrett Alson (Renssalaer, IN/Renssalaer) scored three batters later on a passed ball.

"Vela has just gotten better and better at the plate as the season rolls along," said head coach Bill Boone. "He and Wilhelm have continued to lead us offensively throughout the season. Aaron has really turned up the heat the last four or five games. He keeps coming up with that key hit."

Senior Matt McGuire (Carmel, IN/Carmel) recorded his third win of the season, going the distance and allowing only two runs on seven hits. He struckout seven in the contest.

A three-run third inning and another three-spot in the fifth gave Indiana Wesleyan the win in the second game. Wilhelm finished the game two with two hits, including his fifth double of the season, a run scored and an RBI. Third baseman Abe Honegger (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) went 2-3 in the second game with a run scored. Vela finished 2-3 with an RBI double in the second game.

Wabash (8-20) will travel to Franklin College on Monday for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 12. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
