Late Surges Sends Wabash to Road Victory at Kenyon

A jump shot by Andrew Zimmer with 4:42 left in the game tied the score after Kenyon had lead nearly the entire contest. The Little Giants went on to capture an 87-81 win for their second North Coast Athletic Conference road victory of the season.

Zimmer continued with the hot hand he initially showed in Wabash's Wednesday night win over Earlham. The junior forward, who hit 11-of-14 shots against the Quakers, connected on 10-of-12 attempts against Kenyon to score 22 points. Zimmers was one of five Wabash players to reach double figures in scoring.

The Little Giants took an early 7-2 lead, only to see the Lords respond by moving in front by as many as 11 points in the first half. Kenyon continued to lead in the second half before a basket by Ryan Stephens trimmed the Lords' advantage to two points. Kenyon pushed back in front by six points for much of the half before Zimmer evened the score.

A minute later another basket by Zimmer put Wabash in front for the first time since its early lead. Andy Root, who also finished with 22 points, fired home a three to put the Little Giants up 73-69 at the 2:35 mark. Root would score five more points on two free throws and another three-pointer to make it a seven-point game. Four free throws by Chase Haltom held the lead in answer to quick shots by the Lords. But final free throws by Stephens and Brian Maloney sealed the victory for the Little Giants.

Stephens recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Haltom had 13 points in addition to the 22-point efforts of Zimmer and Root. Aaron Brock had 11 points.

The victory puts the Little Giants in a three-way tie for sixth place in the NCAC standings with a conference record of 3-5. Wabash is 6-11 overall. The Little Giants play host to Wittenberg University Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Chadwick Court.
