Little Giants Finish Season with Victory over DePauw

The Wabash College swimming and diving team completed the 2001-2002 season with a decisive 186-113 victory over DePauw University on Saturday afternoon in the Erdmann Natatorium in Greencastle, Indiana. The Little Giants won both relays and captured ten of twelve individual swimming events, along with seven second place finishes. The tankers produced Wabash top times for the season in five events.

Dennis Bowers (Seymour, IN/Seymour), Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard), Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), and Bernie Manker (Grand Rapids, MI/Northview) won the opening 200 medley relay in 1:38.19, finishing just over a second ahead of the Wabash “B” team of Zach Sundstrom (Indianapolis, IN/North Central), Jon-Myckle Price (Logansport, IN/Logansport), Brett Findley (Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community), and Steve Birrer (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) (1:39.41). The "B" outtouched the DePauw “A” team, who finished with a time of 1:39.88.

Three Little Giants were double individual winners. Bowers won both the 100 backstroke (53.42-Wabash season top time) and 200 backstroke (1:56.32-Wabash season top time). Peacock captured both the 50 freestyle (22.03) and 100 butterfly (52.86). Freshman Brad Williams (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) claimed the 1000 freestyle (10:01.37-Wabash season top time) and 500 freestyle (4:55.00)

Junior Nick Collins (Michigantown, IN/Clinton Central) swam another Wabash season top time, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.11 and was second to Williams in the 500. Findley won the 200 butterfly (1:58.57) and was second to Peacock in the 100 fly. Price touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:01.28). Fahey won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.36) and was second in the 100 freestyle.

Freshman Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) was second in the 1000 freestyle, 200 breaststroke (2:13.47-Wabash season top time), and 200 individual medley.

The Little Giants 400 freestyle relay with Fahey, Peacock, Williams and Manker won the final event of the day in 3:15.43.

Wabash completed the season with an overall record of 42-8 (5-2 in dual meets and 37-6 at multi-school invitationals and conference championships).
