Wabash Wrestlers Eighth at Wheaton

The Little Giants' Will Clarke and Keith Garrard both placed second and Garrett Pino added a fifth place finish to lead Wabash to eight place at the 2007 Pete Willson Wheaton Wrestling Invitational. 

Clarke, seeded third at 184 pounds, started the tournament with an 11-4 victory over Karl Voeck from Wisconsin-Whitewater. The senior followed with a tight 4-3 win to advance to the semifinals, where he beat sixth-seeded Louis Posa from Tri-State 10-4. Clarke faced the fourth seed, Gabe Youel from North Central, in the final match, but lost 5-2 to take home second place.

Garrard entered as the two seed at 197 pounds and won his opening match 7-2 before posting a convincing 22-9 victory over seventh-seeded Joey Yurisich from Olivet. Garrard then handed third-seeded Jon Treml an 11-4 defeat, advancing to face the number four seed, Tim Kelly from Mount St. Joseph. Kelly won a tight match, taking a 7-5 decision to put Garrard in second place.

Pino pinned his first round opponent 1:47 into the opening match at 141 pounds. He picked up a technical fall with an 18-3 lead in the second round against Concordia's Josh Plate in the second round, but lost 5-3 to second-seeded Kenny Thomas from Elmhurst in the third round. Pino rallied for back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket before top-seeded Dave Manoogian from Case Western beat the senior 3-1. Pino picked up a 10-4 victory in the finals to finish fifth overall.

Rob Arnett just missed a spot in the top-eight at 285 pounds, going 3-2 for the weekend.

The Little Giants will play host to the annual Monon Bell Wrestling Duals this Saturday. Action begins at 8 a.m. at Chadwick Court.
