Tennis Team Splits Season Opener

Wabash rallied for an 8-1 victory against Huntington College Saturday evening after dropping a 5-4 contest to Alma College in the first match of the the season Saturday morning.

Sophomore Jay Horrey picked up where he left off last year on the way to earning North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year honors. He swept Alma's Chris Noel in straight sets at number one singles in the morning with a 6-0, 6-0 victory before picking up a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win against Tyler Moore from Huntington that night. Horrey and senior Adam Van Zee combined for two victories at number one doubles. The duo were 8-4 winners over Moore and Brian Lambright in the Huntington match after defeating Noel and Dan Fraser from Alma by a score of 8-3.

Wabash took a second doubles point in the morning session against Alma with an 8-3 win by Dan Petrie and Josh Paul in the third flight. Sean Clerget was the only other winner for the Little Giants against Alma, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at sixth singles against Brett Seymoure.

Clerget and Adrian Starnes had to go to extra games to earn a 9-8 (7-5) victory at number two doubles against Huntington's Daron Short and Mitchell McDonald Saturday night. Petrie and Paul completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win in the third flight.

Van Zee took a straight sets win at number two singles over McDonald, winning 6-3, 6-0. Paul, Starnes, and Clerget were all winners by walkover in their singles' matches.

Wabash (1-1) continues spring season play Thursday afternoon with a 5 p.m. match against Franklin College at the Collett Tennis Center.
