Wabash came from behind against LaGrange, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 11-6 lead. Senior co-captain Ben Prickel (Lafayette, IN/Harrison) threw five innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. Freshmen Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) and Jason Jablonski (Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney) carried hot bats for the Little Giants, along with senior co-captain Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern).
Martin, the all-time leading home run hitter and career RBI leader in Indiana high school history, went 2-2 with three runs scored and an RBI in his first college game. He had one double and a stolen base. Martin finished the weekend trip hitting 5-7 (.714) with two RBIs.
Jablonski went 2-5 with two runs and three RBIs in his first game as a Little Giant. The second basemen drove home two of the seven runs scored in the fifth inning with his second single of the inning. Renbarger was 2-5 in the game with two runs. He also had two RBIs in the fifth on a base hit.
The Little Giants lost an eight-inning affair in the first game Sunday against Oglethorpe, a team with a 5-1 record going into play that day. The Little Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) scored on a Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) single. Oglethorpe came back with two in the bottom of the first, then added a third run in the third inning. Wabash scored a run in the fourth, then tied the game in the seventh when Joe Motuliak (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) was hit by pitch to bring Jared Martin home.
Wabash had a chance to take a lead in the eighth but could not bring home the go-ahead run. Oglethorpe executed a suicide squeeze with one out in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win. Freshman Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) went the distance for Wabash, striking out 11 in 7-1/3 innings. Junior Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) was 2-4 from the plate for the Little Giants.
Wabash fell behind 2-0 in the second game on Sunday before losing 8-1 to finish the weekend with a 1-2 record.
The Little Giants return to action on March 2 in Fort Myers, Florida as part of their annual spring break trip. Wabash will play 10 games in Florida before returning to Indiana to play DePauw University on March 13.
