Wabash senior Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) was named the Outstanding Men's Sprinter/Hurdler at the 2002 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, held March 1-2 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Wabash finished tied for fourth in the 10-team competition.

Wabash tied with Kenyon for fourth with 72 points. Ohio Wesleyan won the team competition with 123 points. Wittenberg was second (88), with Allegheny taking third (76.5). Denison (65), Wooster (57.5), Oberlin (38), Hiram (23), and Earlham (9) rounded out the team scoring.

Green proved to be the man to beat in the 200-meter dash, recording the top time in the preliminary round (23.11). He cut almost a half-second off of his time in finals, winning the event with a time of 22.66. It was almost the same scenario in the 400-meter dash. Green was second in the prelims with a time of 51.57, then took the 400-meter title with a time of 51.28.

Green nearly earned a third title in the championship meet, combining with Joe Bombagetti (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point), Ken Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran), and Jerome Murray (Lawton, OK/Eisenhower) in the 4 X 200-meter relay. The four athletes combined for a time of 1:33.42, taking second place and earning all-conference honors.

Senior Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) and junior Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Evansville North) also turned in all-conference performances. Smit took second in the 3000-meter run (8:47.43). DeYound captured third place in the triple jump with a leap of 43-7 1/4.
