Senior Tony Caldwell and freshman Adam Petro both trimmed a few more ticks off their "B" cut times this weekend at the Kenyon Invitational. Both appear to be in the NCAA Championship meet, but will await the final word on March 2.
Caldwell (left) posted a 51.88 in the 100 backstroke time trial after having already
competed as a member of the Little Giants' 400 medley and 200 medley relay teams.
Petro put together a 200 butterfly time of 1:53.62, currently the ninth best time
reported in the nation. Caldwell's backstroke time is 10th best nationally. The top
18 times usually earn a spot in the national meet.
The 200 medley relay team posted a season-best effort of 1:34.60, the 11th-best time
in the nation. That mark should be good enough to stay in at least the top-20 by
the end of the year.
The Little Giants posted 10 lifetime-best times at the last chance meet, leading
Wabash to a second place finish in the overall team scoring. Denison won with 512.5
points, followed by the Little Giants with 447.5. Carnegie Mellon (441.5), Case
Western Reserve (241.5), Kenyon (131), Ohio Wesleyan (86), DePauw (86), Allegheny
(51), Ohio University (51), and Wittenberg (41) rounded out the team scoring.
The NCAA will continue to gather times from last chance meets from the weekend over
the next few days before officially announcing the field for the 2007 Division III
Championship meet, to be held in Houston, Texas March 15-17.
