Crawfordsville residents looking for free entertainment Saturday don’t have to travel far.
Crawfordsville Main Street presents Downtown Film Night 7 p.m. Saturday at the Vanity Theater. The movie "Elizabethtown," featuring Kristen Dunst, Orlando Bloom, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin, will be shown free of charge.
The PG-13-rated film is primarily set in Elizabethtown, Ky. Main character Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) is on the brink of suicide after losing his job and girlfriend when he meets a unique and caring flight attendant on his way to Elizabethtown for his father’s memorial service. Throughout the movie, viewers witness Baylor finding meaning and purpose for life as he plans his father’s service.
The monthly film night is a way Main Street can showcase "our beautiful downtown," Debbie Leech, program manager of Crawfordsville Main Street, said.
"We feel this is an excellent opportunity for community members to feel a sense of belonging to their downtown — a way for friends and family to have an outing without spending a lot of time traveling. Hopefully in the process people will discover more things they could enjoy doing in downtown Crawfordsville," Leech said.
Movies are chosen by a Main Street committee. In March, the film "The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood" will be featured as part of a special Girlfriends Day Downtown that same day. In April, the film "The Enron Story — The Smartest Guys in the Room" will be shown with the possibility of a discussion led by a Wabash College professor after the film, Leech said.
"This is a way for friends and family to have an ‘outing’ without spending a lot of time traveling. Hopefully in the process people will discover more things they could enjoy doing in downtown Crawfordsville," Leech said.
"This is to attract people to downtown to have dinner and enjoy an evening close to home. Hopefully they will discover the Vanity also provides a wonderful series of live entertainment all through the year," Leech added.
Popcorn and bottled water will be available during the show, which is made possible by JPMorgan Chase Foundation and Wabash College.
