Wabash was in front 6-0 going into the fifth when the Wasps mounted their first scoring threat of the game. With a run home for Emory and Henry and no one out, the Wasps had runners on first and second when Brian Blaemire hit a ground ball back to Wabash pitcher Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville). Martin threw to Motuliak at second to start the double play, but before Motuliak could throw to first he collided with the baserunner coming from first, breaking both bones in his lower left leg. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, with surgery scheduled for Thursday morning.
This was the second injury of the week for the Little Giants' middle infield. Freshman Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) was injured on Sunday against Ferrum College while covering first base on a sacrifice bunt. He suffered and injury to his left shoulder that will keep him out of action for the remainder of the Florida trip.
When play resumed, the Little Giants silenced the Emory and Henry threat to hold their five-run lead. The Wasps scored two runs in the top of the seventh before Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) came on to strike out the last two batters of the game to earn his first save of the season.
Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson), Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville), and Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) led the offensive attack for Wabash. Stanton was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Knott went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mack had two doubles in four at bats with a run scored and three RBIs.
Wabash scored six runs in the first three innings in the first game on the way to a seven-run win. Freshman Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) got the first two hits of his collegiate career, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Martin was 2-for-4 while scoring three times. Mack also scored three times while going 1-for-3. Freshman Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) earned his second victory of the season, scattering five hits over six innings. He struggled a bit on the mound, allowing seven walks while striking out eight, but allowed only three earned runs in the game. Rowe came on in relief in the final inning to strike out two batters, getting the third hitter to fly out to end the game.
Wabash moves to 4-5 for the season with the win, and are 3-3 for the Florida trip. The Little Giants were scheduled to play Pitt-Bradford on Thursday, but the game has been cancelled to a scheduling conflict. Wabash will return to action on Friday afternoon.
