Sunday Split Sends Wabash Home 7-6

The Wabash baseball team completed a successful spring trip to Florida on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader against Westfield State College. Wabash won the opener 6-5 before losing the final game 8-7.

The Little Giants took a 3-2 lead in the first game before scoring three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Junior catcher Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) slammed a triple to right field that scored Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) and Jason Jablonski (Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney) to give Wabash a 6-3 lead. Westfield added two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Little Giants' advantage to one run before freshman Judd Crowgey (Salem, OH/Salem) came on to strike out the final batter of the game and earn his first save of the season.

Jablonski and Josh Stanton (Mooresville, IN/Mooresville) each had two hits for Wabash. Knott had three RBIs in the contest for the Little Giants. Freshman Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) earned his third win of the season, striking out eight in the contest.

The Little Giants took an early 3-0 lead in the second game, and led 7-3 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning before Westfield State put five runs on the board. Wabash had opportunities but could not tie the game in the late innings. The Little Giants outhit Westfield 15-7, but Wabash stranded 12 runners while Westfield left only four runners on base.

Knott went 4-for-5 in the contest. Freshman Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) had three hits, as did freshman outfielder Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration). Nance led the team with two RBIs and the only extra base hit of the game for Wabash, a double in the second inning.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Little Giants. Wabash finished the trip with a 6-4 record in Florida, and are 7-6 overall going into Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader at DePauw University at 1 p.m.
