Petro's Near-Record Setting Effort Ends Nationals Run

What better way to celebrate a great weekend at the NCAA Division III National Championship meet than with one of the best swims in Wabash College history. That's what freshman Adam Petro posted when he came with 1/100th of a second of the school record in the 200 butterfly Saturday night. Petro and senior Tony Caldwell completed their weekend at Nationals with two 13th-place finishes in the finals.

In Saturday morning's preliminary heat, Petro came from behind after earning the final spot in the race the initial seeding to post a 1:52.78 in the 200 fly, only 2/100th of a second away from the school record while earning a place in the evening finals. As close as the freshman was to breaking the record in the morning session, he got even closer in the finals. Powering his way to the finish, Petro touched the wall at 1:52.77, 1/100th of a second away from the record while finishing 13th overall.

Caldwell had already made his mark Friday night after qualifying for the finals with a time of 52.26 to finish 15th in the 100 backstroke. He trimmed that time in the finals, earning a 13th-place finish after touching the wall in 52.05.

The duo posted several lifetime bests at the nationals.
