Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Chad Westphal had two research articles published in SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. Numer. Anal. 44 (2006): "Weighted-Norm First-Order System Least Squares for Problems with Corner Singularities" and "First-Order System Least Squares (FOSLS) for Geometrically Nonlinear Elasticity." In addition, Westphal began work last summer on a National Science Foundation grant entitled "Least-Squares Finite Element Methods for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations," for which he served as the co-PI. Related to these activities he presented a talk at the 9th Copper Mountain Conference on Iterative Methods entitled "A Least-Squares Finite Element Method for Viscoelastic Flow."
