Wabash men have often been known for fighting the good fight – and winning.
Scott Dreher ’82, a San Diego attorney who does pro bono work representing the city’s homeless, recently had a big win. Dreher filed a class-action suit against the city in the fall of 2004 on behalf of nine homeless people who were issued illegal-lodging tickets for sleeping on city streets.
In February of this year a court-approved settlement allowed homeless people to sleep on public property from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.
A story ran in Thursday (March 29) edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune that brought the saga to a close. Dreher’s suit represented nine homeless people, but he and the other lawyers working the case had to find one of the nine original homeless plaintiffs to sign legal documents to finalize the case.
Ironically, Dreher noted in an email this week, he originally met the woman they found to sign the documents the same day the photo above was taken for a Wabash Magazine profile.
