Thomas Two Hits from Record, Dodaro Tops 50-Hit Mark

Wabash sophomores Jake Thomas and Matt Dodaro continued their pursuit of the single season hits record Tuesday night. Thomas went 3-for-4 while Dodaro as 2-for-4 in the Little Giants’ 12-5 loss at Rose-Hulman.

Thomas opened the second inning with a single, his 53rd of the season, before adding two more to pass Billy King ’07 and his mark of 54. The sophomore outfielder is alone in second place in the Wabash record book, one hit away from tying Zak Judd ’98 and his 56 hits collected in during the 1997 season.

Dodaro’s two hits made him the sixth player in the 139-year history of Wabash baseball to join the 50-hit club. He now has 51 in his career. Dodaro is still one double and three home runs away from tying those two single season marks. He is also three total bases away from becoming the first Little Giant to top 100 bases in a season. Dodaro already owns that record, moving to a total of 97 this year with tonight’s two singles.

The Fighting Engineers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in the contest. Wabash scored on an RBI single by Shaun Rico in the second inning, but Rose-Hulman answered with two runs in the third inning. Wabash scored two runs in the eighth and another two in the ninth after trailing 12-1.

Rico, Dodaro, and Thomas each had two of Wabash’s nine total hits.

Dodaro and Thomas will continue their assault on the record book in their final two games of the season. Wabash (12-25-1) will play Earlham College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Mud Hollow Field beginning at 1 p.m.
