Less than one week after dropping a match to Ohio Wesleyan University, the Wabash tennis team avenged that loss with a 5-1 victory over the Battling Bishops in the second round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament. The Little Giants lost their opening round match by a score of 5-0 to second-seeded Denison.
Last Saturday Wabash could manage only one doubles victory and two singles wins. Friday night the Little Giants responded by sweeping doubles play. Adam Van Zee and Jay Horrey (right) added another victory to their Wabash single-season doubles record with an 8-2 victory in the first flight of play. The duo improved to 22-11 for the season. Adrian Starnes and Sean Clerget picked up an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Dan Petrie and Josh Paul added another team point with an 8-3 win at third doubles.
Horrey scored a 6-2, 6-1 win at number one singles to put the Little Giants one point away from advancing to the finals of the conference tournament. That point would come from his doubles partner when Van Zee (bottom left) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number two singles.
Wabash, entering the tournament as the number seven seed, dropped its opening match of the tournament to the host Big Red in the morning session after being swept in doubles play before dropping two singles matches.
The Little Giants will play Oberlin, a team they beat 5-2 at the GLCA Tournament, in the fifth place match Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Wabash has never finished higher than sixth at the NCAC tournament
