Wabash senior Tony Caldwell has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V At-Large Second Team.
As a member of the Wabash swimming and diving team, Caldwell posted three of the fastest 15 times in the 200 backstroke in school history this season. He also owns six of the top-10 times in the 100 backstroke in his career, with four of those top times achieved this season. He also set the school record in the 100 backstroke again this year, breaking his own record of 52.05 set in 2005. Caldwell's record-setting time came in his national qualifying effort at the Kenyon Invitational this season, where he touched the wall in 51.88.
Caldwell earned a berth at the Nationals, where he became the first Wabash swimmer to score in seven years. He placed 13th in the 100 back, posting a time of 52.05 to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. He also earned two First Team All-North North Coast Athletic Conference awards.
Out of the pool, Caldwell has been a force in the community and the classroom. Recently he presented a research project at the Experimental Biology Conference in Washington, D.C. He traveled to Mississippi to assist Hurrican Katrina victims over the 2005 Wabash fall break. Caldwell has also been a leader on the Wabash campus in his work with the Co-Motion Project to benefit the Montgomery County Family Crisis Shelter and the Julian Center in Indianapolis.
Caldwell recently graduated with a 3.80 GPA as a biology and chemistry major. He has accepted a job with Eli Lilly as a pharmaceutical sales representative.
