Wabash senior Nathan Bates has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Cross Country/Track and Field First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

A four-year member of the Little Giant track team, Bates won three outdoor 400-meter dash titles at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship meets, the first 400 runner to accomplish the feat. He holds the school record in the indoor 400 with a time of 50.00 in addition to participating as a member of the school-record setting 800- and 1600-meter relay teams. He also earned the NCAC indoor 400-meter title in 2005.

Bates was an First Team Academic All-District in 2006 and 2007, and Second Team Academic All-American in 2006. He recently graduated from Wabash with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average as a psychology major and religion minor, earning membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Bates is also a member of the APO service fraternity and is the track team representative to the Wabash Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program annually honors over 1,600 student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
