Little Giants Explode with 29 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep of Earlham

The Wabash baseball team tallied 29 hits in a two-game sweep of Earlham College on Sunday. The Little Giants took the first game 10-7, followed by an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.

Freshman Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) had six hits for the Little Giants, three in each game. The rookie shortstop was 3-for-4 in the first game with a run scored before taking control of the second game. Schubert was 3-for-4 in the second contest, scoring three runs and tallying five RBIs. He reached base in the first inning after being hit by pitch, then left no doubt as to whether he would reach base in his second at bat.

With Wabash leading 1-0, Schubert slammed his first career home run, a three-run shot over the left center field wall, to give Wabash a 4-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Jon Horne (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) scattered six hits over the next five innings to earn his fourth win of the season.

The Little Giants had 17 hits in the first game, their biggest output of hits of the season. In addition to Schubert's three-hit performance, Wabash got three hits from junior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) and freshman Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg). Martin was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Goff had three hits in three at bats with two RBIs and a run scored.

Junior Jake Knott (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) got the scoring started for the Little Giants in the first inning, slamming a three-run homer over the right field fence to put Wabash up 3-0. Senior Bryson Renbarger (Converse, IN/Eastern) hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the third, to put Wabash up for good. Renbarger went 3-for-7 for the series, giving him 50 for the season. He is third on the single-season hit list, trailing Brian Hartman, who had 53 hits in 1996, and Zak Judd's 56-hit effort in 1997. Renbarger added another double to his season totals, giving him 11 for the season and putting him two double short of tying the Wabash single season record set by Judd and Mike Funk.

Junior Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) came on in relief of Martin to earn his third victory of the season. Senior Ben Prickel (Lafayette, IN/Harrison) recorded his second save of the season.

The Little Giants played only two games against the Quakers after the doubleheader orginally scheduled for Saturday afternoon was postponed due to rain.

Wabash is 17-22 for the season, 4-7 in North Coast Athletic Conference Western Division play.
