Everything looked good for the Little Giant soccer team. Senior Gary Simkus scored his third goal of the season in the 60th minute to put Wabash up 1-0. Two goals by Earlham College gave the Quakers a 2-1 victory in Richmond, Indiana Wednesday night.
Earlham was shut out until Atiq Zamani scored with 2:17 remaining in the match to tie the score at 1-1. The Quakers (5-8, 2-2 NCAC) scored again with only four seconds showing on the game clock, giving Earlham its second North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season.
Simkus took a pass from freshman Andre Hall midway through the second period, putting the ball in the back of the net to put Wabash in front. The Little Giants fired 11 shots in the match with good accuracy, forcing Earlham goalkeeper Kyle Thompson to make six save out of seven shots on goal. Devin Moss made seven saves for Wabash in his second start of the season.
"It's dissappointing because we played as a team with a capital 'T'," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "We were the better team tonight. The ball just continues to bounce the wrong way for us. Our guys gave everything they had."
Wabash (2-11, 0-5 NCAC) returns to Mud Hollow Field for an NCAC match against Allegheny College Saturday at 11 a.m.
