Overtime Goal Sends Wabash to Home Loss to Gators

David Egan's goal in the final minutes of the first overtime period gave the Allegheny Gators a 1-0 victory over Wabash in North Coast Athletic Conference soccer Saturday afternoon.

Egan put a header into the net on a reset by the Gators after a foul by Wabash to pick up the game winner.

Senior Jon Miller made nine saves prior to that play, constantly turning aside the shot attempts of Allegheny. Wabash had three shots on goal, including an excellent opportunity in the extra period, but couldn't find the back of the net.

"Losing in overtime against the best team in our conference this year tells you a lot about what kind of performances we are giving lately," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "As last week against Hiram and Earlham, we played a temendous game today against a very talented Gator team. Unfortunately, the difference today was a goal that we missed at the five-minute mark of the overtime period, and their chance three minutes later. They scored, we didn't. It's as simple as that.

"Don't get fooled by the number of shots they had, because the fact of the
matter is that they had two open chances and so did we."

Freshman Andre Hall had on shot on goal, as did senior Gary Simkus. Sophomore Christian Krecnk came off the bench to tally a third shot attempt toward the net.

"I feel bad for the guys because they left everything on the pitch and just the final result wasn't favorable, even though we deserved success," Giannini added. "I am very proud of the guys and the way we are stepping on the pitch ready to play.  We are going to Franklin hungry for a win. I am sure my guys will be resiliant in pursue of a victory on Wednesday afternoon."

The match between Wabash and Grizzlies at Franklin begins at 4 p.m.
