Wabash scored two victories over the weekend, including a 162-132 win over Carthage College in the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com College Meet of the Week Saturday afternoon in the Class of 1950 Natatorium. Friday the Little Giants picked up a 123-99 win at Transylvania University.
The Little Giants captured six first-place finishes in the water against Carthage. Wabash opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Zach Phillips, Evan Rhinesmith, Adam Petro, and Daniel Michael touched in 1:37.68 for the victory. The quartet of Eric Vaughn, Jordan Extine, Adam Current, and Jordon Blackwell added two more points to the team total with a third place finish (1:41.25).
Blackwell and Craig Vetor finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle. Blackwell won the event with a time of 1:49.52, with Vetor right behind at 1:49.72. Petro took first place in the 200 butterfly (1:56.15). Robert Fozkos was third in the event, finishing in 2:03.28. Daniel won the 50 free with a time of 21.40, outdistancing Carthage’s Andy Bax in second (22.03). Little Giant junior Blaine Cooper-Surma was third (22.46).
Michael and Blackwell swept the top two spots in the 100 freestyle. Michael finished first, touching in 48.46 with Blackwell second at 48.79. Petro added a final first-place finish in the 100 fly, winning with a time of 52.85. Current took second place (54.30).
The Wabash divers secured the victory for the team with a sweep of the top-three places. Freshman Cole Hatcher won the one-meter competition, scoring 224.80 points. Rob Fenoglio was second (212.35), with Tyler Foster (177.50) finishing third. Fenoglio came back to win on the three-meter board with a score of 230.90 points. Hatcher (209.35) and Foster (203.05) completed the scoring for Wabash.
Friday night the Little Giant scored four first-place finishes in the opening events and never looked back in the win over Transylvania. The 400 medley relay team of Petro, Rhinesmith, Current, and Cooper-Surma won in 3:41.28. Vetor captured the 1000-yard freestyle title with a winning time of 10:43.53 before scoring another victory in the 100 freestyle (49.72).
Sophomore Elijah Sanders won the 200 freestyle (1:49.97), with teammate Chad Woods finishing second (1:52.60). Sanders came back to win the 500 freestyle (5:00.58), once again finishing just ahead of Woods in second (5:09.02).
Philip Towne took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.14, barely touching ahead of Nick Rockefeller in second with a time of 23.15. Current added an individual first place finish in the 100 butterfly, winning the race with a time of 54.37. Petro also won an individual competition, finishing first in the 100 backstroke (55.03).
Wabash (2-0) travels to Greencastle, Indiana Wednesday night to battle DePauw University at 7 p.m.
