With the announcement of Saturday's All-America team by D3football.com at the 2007 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, Wabash senior Adi Pynenberg became the first consensus football All-America selection in five seasons.
Pynenberg was named as a First Team linebacker to the national web site's All-America team, moving up from his Second Team All-America pick by the site in 2006 and Honorable Mention selection in 2005. He had already earned 2007 All-America honors earlier this season from the American Football Coaches Association and was an Associated Press Little All-America pick. He is the first consensus All-American since tight end Ryan Short '03 earned All-America honors from all three organizations in 2002.
Pynenberg finished ninth in the nation in tackles for losses with an average of two per game, ninth in solo tackles (7 per game) and 16th in total tackles (12.9 per game) Pynenberg set the Wabash single-season record for total tackles, making 168 stops. His 26-1/2 tackles for losses this year were also a Wabash single-season best.
Pynenberg secured his All-America status after setting the Wabash career record for tackles with 451. He also tops the Little Giant lists for unassisted tackles (245), assists (206), and tackles for losses (73-1/2).
He was named team co-captain in 2006 and 2007, leading the Little Giants to three consecutive NCAC titles and NCAA playoff berths in 2005 and 2007. This year's team won its first two playoff games before losing at UW-Whitewater, the eventual DIII national champion. He was a 2007 Gagliardi Trophy finalist and was selected to play in the 2007 Aztec Bowl before declining the offer due to academic commitments at the College.
A psychology major with a 3.58 cumulative GPA, Pynenberg was also a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team pick.
